The Painter
The painter elegantly settled into the swivel chair and began:
“I met them at a terrace — two girls, you know, students. They had a yellowish tint to their hair. I don’t know if you saw them the other day too, did you? Cute, but not really. They came to see V. We talked about fine arts, exhibitions, the EU, and going abroad. But I ended up talking more. You know how he is — always working. When it comes to conversation, he tends to stay quiet. So, I ended up rambling. Should I let you write this down, or do you want me to keep talking? Because I don’t like to chatter like this, for no reason. To stuff you with my craziness.”
He sighed, then added softly:
“Ah, my dear, you are very dear to me. If only you knew… if it weren’t for…”
He stopped, casting me coy glances.
“And then, you kind of look like my wife. And she imagines that… being a teenager, she would be young. No, lady, no — a woman is young only once, while she is a girl; a man is young until he dies. I know, it’s not fair, but nothing is fair in this world.”
He adjusted his chair and continued:
“Now, to return to the chaos of last night — or rather, the night before. Let me tell you how it went. After the haze, I brought the girls here, to the gallery. And let me tell you, there was plenty of food and drinks because the girls had money, and neither V nor I are exactly poor. And it was nice… you know how it is with girls.”
He chuckled:
“What do you mean you don’t know? Ha! The next morning, when they woke up, they found only me, still doing my warm-up.”
“What?”
“You’re surprised too, aren’t you? V was no longer there.”
“Well, of course. What, is he serious, like I am? Now that’s a question.”
He laughed again and said:
“So, I solved both myself and loved them with all their… well, their shit. Ah, maybe V did one or two rounds, but on the third one, he ran away. What a shame! What a shame!”
And with that, the painter signed his watercolor and turned it towards me:
“What do you think, Ilona? Isn’t it true that I captured the essence of the flowers? I’m not saying it’s easy to paint people, because it’s not; it’s even harder than loving them. Drawing houses isn’t exactly a walk in the park either. What I’m saying is that nature is still at the core of everything; we evolved from it as well.”
He paused, his gaze shifting to his work:
“Hey, do you like my roses? And here are the apples you enjoyed yesterday. Am I interrupting your work? Forgive me, I’ll stop talking.”
He smiled, adding:
“And hungry. I’m going to Argentin to have a beer. Should I bring you a quince? Are you hungry too?”
His voice softened as he trailed off:
“Wait… don’t get too excited about the quince just yet, because first, I’ll wash it gently, then pamper it slowly, tenderly. Then… we’ll cleanse ourselves, then indulge, savoring the moment… And only later, when the time feels right, will I finally capture it’s essence on canvas.”
