Intro
Branding and Promotion — these are topics we all seem to have a love-hate relationship with.
❓Promo has vital importance.
❓Promo requires hard work.
❓Promo seems like a necessary evil.
❓Promo makes us think we need to spend money on it.
But here’s the twist: branding helps your work get noticed, promotion engages readers, and it might even help you earn some cash.
❓Should we fight against it?
❓Or maybe… think about it?
❓Don’t we have a responsibility as writers and creators to spread our work to everyone?
This article examines conventional and out-of-the-box methods to promote your work.
So… let’s make promo work for us, not the other way around.

Goal 1: Own Your Platform, Own Your Future
RATING: Review Your Platform Profiles
- Review your social and blogging platform profiles, from time to time.
- Compare what you hoped to achieve with your actual results.
- Figure out which platforms help you grow as a writer and which ones just sit there like a resume or portfolio.
⚠️Remember, as a writer, these platforms are tools to boost your career — to network with other writers and readers, to promote your brand, to make money, and to sell your books — not just for hanging out online.
INSIGHT: Find Out What Each Platform Does (For You)
Not all platforms serve the same function.
Some help you talk to your audience, while others just show off your work.
- Pick out which platforms matter for your career and which ones aren’t meeting your needs.
⚠️Keep in mind that putting your energy into the right platforms will help you connect better with your audience and reach your goals. Also… make sure you refresh your profiles every six months or so, and always 30 days before any public event.
SECRET: Social Impact
If you’re committed to your craft, the results will show up in unexpected ways:
- Lovers: When readers start to have crushes on you after reading your stories, it means your writing has grabbed them at a deeper level.
- Haters: When other writers slam you hard, it’s often because they see you as a real threat.
- Social Evolution: Jump on new chances, make up for your past, and use your platform to push yourself into a better future.

Goal 2: Master the Art of Thoughtful Tagging
RATING: Check How You Tag People
Tagging folks on Facebook with @followers or @all can seem cold and distant.
This applies to tagging on other sites, like Medium too. 😆
Does tagging count as spam on Medium?
What is the official position?
I invite you to read the following article written by our writer, Michael John Scott.
- Think about how much you personalize your tags, if you ask first, and whether your tags help the person you’re tagging.
- Ask yourself if the way you tag builds relationships or just looks like you’re trying to promote stuff.
⚠️️ ️️It’s key to ensure your tags mean something and help create a back-and-forth discussion.
INSIGHT: Discover the True Impact of Your Tags
Tags should mean more than just a mention — they need to give content that helps and fits.
Good tagging can boost your network, create strong bonds, and have a positive effect on people’s minds. When you tag someone, think about:
- Content Quality: Are you sharing useful and suitable content?
- Networking and Making Friends: Does your tag help build a real connection?
- Feeling Connected: Are your tags friendly, helpful, and interesting?
- Give and Take: Does the person you tag get something back, like a follow or a like?
SECRET: The Magic of Smart Tagging
When you put thought into tagging people, you might be amazed by the outcomes:
- Positive Reactions: Tailored tags can strengthen relationships, encourage mutual backing, and potentially spark teamwork.
- Human Connection: Expressing your true self through tags can help others relate to your content lowering the chance of negative responses.
- Handling Backlash: Some folks won’t like being tagged, but if you’re mindful and ready to change your approach, you can keep things upbeat.
⚠️ Be prepared to say “sorry” and stop tagging those who object to your tags. This way, your network stays involved and supportive.

Goal 3: Unlock Advanced Promotion Strategies
RATING: Assess Your Promotion Strategies
- Get involved with the Medium community by trying out different ways to promote your work.
- You can team up with others, do interviews, write reviews, join a publication, or start your own.
⚠️ Figure out which methods work best for what you want to achieve.
INSIGHT: Boost Your Promotion Game
- Team Up: Work with other writers or creators to share each other’s stuff. This can help you reach more people and show your work to new readers.
- Do Interviews: Take part in interviews or host them yourself to get noticed and show you know your stuff.
- Reviews: Ask other writers or readers to review your work. This builds trust and helps you get new followers. Offer to review their work too. This creates a helpful community.
- Publishing in a Publication: Send your stories to well-known publications. This gets you more readers and makes you look more credible.
- Creating a Publication: Start your own publication on Medium. This lets you share and promote your stories and others’ work. It helps you build a loyal audience and show off what you know.
SECRET: Unlock the Strength of Community Involvement
- Cross-Promotion: Learn how teaming up with other writers can boost your reach and influence.
- Author Interviews: See how interviews can raise your profile and create new chances to connect and network.
- Reviews: Find out how both good and bad reviews can boost your credibility and draw more readers. Exchanging reviews helps build strong community bonds.

Goal 4: Master the Art of Sharing and Importing
RATING Check Your Sharing Methods
❓Facebook Groups
❓X (Twitter)
❓WordPress
❓Importing to Medium (On your Homepage, click on your profile picture, click Stories. Click Import a story. Paste the URL, and click Import.)
❓Exporting from Medium (Click on your profile icon. Choose Settings, then Security & Apps, and Download your information. You’ll see a small popup explaining you’ll be emailed a link to download your export in a zip file format.)
❓Importing to WordPress (Upload the zip file downloaded from Medium into WordPress. More, here:
INSIGHT: Make Your Sharing Better
- Facebook Groups: Put links in groups that match your content. Talk with group members in a real way and don’t spam. Join talks that relate to your articles.
- X (Twitter): X offers wide reach. Share links, write catchy tweets, use popular hashtags, and tag influencers. Think about using Twitter threads to dig deeper into your content.
- Email: Use email marketing to promote your Medium stories. Grow your email list and create interesting newsletters to send readers to your stories.
- WordPress: Post links to Medium articles or complete stories — you can rewrite these and include a note: first published on Medium, by (your name), date, the publication (if applicable). More info below.
SECRET: Find Secret Perks
- Boosting on WordPress: Post links to Medium articles or full stories with a brief introduction related to the WordPress Daily Prompt (You’ll find these prompts on your WP Dashboard). This will give your stories a boost.
- Content Export: Move your Medium content to WordPress to reach more readers and connect with new audiences.
- Content Import: Bring relevant articles from other sources into your Medium profile to add value to your content and increase your visibility.
- Show Medium Posts (on WordPress): Try Plugins. Remember that you’ll need at least a Professional WordPress account to install the plugin. (I want to do this too… in September or later. For that, I’ll search for a good plugin — there are lots of them.)

On A Final Note…
So… why should one promote and create a personal brand?
Well, the other day I argued with our librarian friend (who is also a writer) and my husband.
They said it’s all vanity; completely pointless.
Then I turned to my husband — a fine artist who has lived with me in the same apartment 24/7 for three years.
And we are happily married.
So I asked him: “Fine, we know everything about each other. So, in general, what do I work on? And… what do I do on Medium?”
Confidently he answered, “You review books.”
“Every day?”
“Yes.”
Now here’s the kicker: Over the past five years, I’ve translated around fifteen books into English (or German), published two of my own books, and written hundreds of articles.
But what does my spouse think I’m doing?
Reviewing books.
Which I might have done a gazillion times in my life, but hey, only once this year — so, progress!
The lesson?
Well, maybe I need better personal branding… or just a louder voice at home! 😺
