In the Rose Bush Love Slept
In the rose bush love slept,
Spring came, spring called;
Love heard it, love awoke,
Looked out from the bud and laughed,
And thought, it might be too early,
And so it calmly slept again.
But spring does not give up,
It kisses her awake every morning,
He dallies with her from early till late,
Until she has opened her heart,
And satisfies his hot longing,
And rewards every sunbeam.
(August Heinrich Hoffmann von Fallersleben, 1798–1874)
Love Gives and Takes
Love
gives and takes
with uncalculating simplicity;
Love
lives in the joy of giving pleasure
pleasure-giving love;
Love
loves the smallest thing, done
with heartfelt
love!
(Johann Kaspar Lavater, 1741–1801)
Yes, You Are Mine!
Yes, you are mine!
I’ll tell it to the blue sky,
I’ll confide it to the dark night,
I’ll carry it as a joyful message
On mountain heights, through heath and meadow.
The whole world shall bear witness:
Yes, you are mine!
And forever mine!
(August Heinrich Hoffmann von Fallersleben, 1798–1874)
