Best of Love Poems: ‘Sweet Beloved, Let Me…’

Verses by Mihai Eminescu, translated by Julia Kalman

Please make sure to spend a minimum of 30 seconds reading my story.
I truly cherish the interaction of authentic readers. Thank you very much

Sweet beloved, oh, let me gaze

Upon your face, your heavenly eyes,

To touch your golden silk-like hair,

Gazing upon you, to go mad with love!

Ah, your round arm is white — gracefully resting

On my shoulders — I look

Into your eyes, at your face — at your young mouth,

Listening in astonishment to your crazy words!

Crazy, for it has no order and reason,

But grace and childish love,

At your mouth, which smilingly lies to me,

Toward covering the sweet mystery,

Which it tells me — not when your hot eye

From its lashes tells me voluptuously –

Ah, all my love, a child in rays,

Is concentrated in your luminous being!

Your smile is a sunbeam,

And your eyes are stars in my night,

And your breast, like virgin snow,

You cover it gently with your hand,

When, trembling, you look and smiling

At its sweet flowers growing nearby –

And your kiss — oh, tell me, tell me,

With what does that sweet wonder resemble!

If it weren’t for you, what would life be,

With its hopes and goodness and all!

A dream mixed with mist,

A torment — how I would end it if I could;

While thus a night is magnificent,

Lost in stars that swim in the heavens,

Through them passes the moon, melancholic –

Give me a kiss, my love — and another one!

To the kiss, your mouth hesitates,

And your eyes look dark and dreamy.

And, beloved, playful,

Don’t you know that kissing is a sin,

And in their dark sweetness,

Children’s eyes don’t forget –

Without crying behind their languor,

And their voluptuous darkness!

For what would you say if I now

Would forget everything… you understand me –

It’s true that only your word is needed

To bind all my nature in a chain –

But that word, a series of jokes,

With which my passion you direct,

Will you say it? — Oh, hush — oh, hush, don’t say it –

Did you say it? — angrily, you — wisdom!

In vain, your gentle words advise –

Your seriousness makes me smile;

To the kiss, your mouth curls;

To the kiss, your eyes close;

You’re sly! under the eyelash that shadows,

Your eyes sparkle, and it seems like they laugh;

With your arm covering them?… Are you upset?

Why pretend, my beloved, you sly one?

Please, clap, engage, and… stay tuned for the next story…! But, most importantly, a profound thank you to each one of you. Your unwavering support has been invaluable.
