If I lived through ages vast,
My thoughts to you, dear, would steadfast,
Eternally, they would soar,
And all that’s sacred deep within,
Sweet angel, for you I’d spin,
For you alone, forevermore.
The gentlest thoughts I possess,
The tender feelings I confess,
My grandest yearning, no less,
To you, to you, I dedicate.
Only you, forever true,
I offer them, a sacred view,
As if to God, they resonate.
You, a being of admiration!
With a word, with a smile’s creation,
With a sweet and tender kiss!
You gave me soul, you gave me life,
And the sweetness of heaven’s rife,
In your embrace, divine bliss!
With your love, you granted me,
That lofty, divine ecstasy,
That heavenly sense so grand.
Powerfully, it does subdue,
Uplifting us to a celestial view,
On an angelic throne, we stand.
You, Elena!… But woe is mine!
In a night of storms so malign,
Cruel skies did us divide!

My boundless joy and cheer,

Such is fate! In this world so wide,
All that bears a sweet name’s guide,
All that’s grand and fair,

Like a song, like a flower’s grade,

The star arrives, the star shall wane!
Thus, my sweet consolation’s gain,
Vanished from this earthly plain.
It perished, went with you,
To the abode of light so true,
And I weep upon your beloved bier!
Alone, alone with my sorrow,
Lost upon life’s uncertain morrow,
Like a hapless, sightless one,
My life dwindles, my grief swells,
And my yearning forever dwells,
Upon your cherished tombstone.
Farewell! On these shores,
Where the Bosporus gently roars,
Softly, calmly, I resign,
Angel of my endless love!
