Ah! life for me, dear angel,
Without you, is a barren wrangle,
No good, no gift does it entangle,
No joy, no bliss to find.
In the sky, whether it’s bright,
With clouds or a tranquil night,
My soul sighs with all its might,
A bitter sigh, unkind.
Any glimmer the senses seize,
Brings life, with a voice that appeases,
Lost in the black mist that teases,
My soul’s voice congealed.
Now the sky wears a smiling guise,
Nature renews, youthful and wise,
Yet, within me, darkness lies,
A world in sorrow revealed.
In vain, the joys that tempt,
In vain, the comforts that attempt,
To soothe my pain, exempt,
To end my heartfelt moan.
Past happiness, a source of woe,
Its memory, a tale of woe,
Feeds the sorrow that continues to grow,
In my heart overthrown.
Oh, waves with frothy foam!
Carry me, as if I roam,
Like a nameless leaf alone,
Gently, through the sea.
And cast me from the deep,
Lost, without breath, into the steep,
Upon the shore of forgetfulness, a keep,
By the Bosporus, set free!
