The Motivational Mix-up

Daily writing prompt
What motivates you?

So, let me take you back in time to when I was working on my university essay about extrinsic and intrinsic motivation. I found myself sitting in the dentist’s waiting room, contemplating my assignment. As luck would have it, the person sitting next to me struck up a conversation, and guess what? He turned out to be a psychologist and also happened to be related to the dentist. Talk about a small world!

As we chatted away, the dentist joined in on our discussion about motivation. And here’s where it gets interesting – he surprised us both by offering a glass of cognac and some fine cigars. And just to clarify, he jokingly mentioned that he was too old to try and charm me or any other student, but he could definitely motivate old dental crowns and crones! Haha, don’t worry, that was just his playful sense of humor. In reality, he was still quite a dashing guy, maybe in his sixties or so.

But back to the story! The psychologist took charge of teaching me the theoretical side of motivation, while the dentist, being the practical person he was, shared his insights on how motivation plays out in the real world. It was such a fun and enlightening experience, learning from both of them.

Can you believe it? All this happened while I was waiting for my turn at the dentist’s office! Talk about unexpected encounters leading to fascinating conversations. It just goes to show that you never know where you’ll find motivation and wisdom, even in the most unlikely of places.

Looking back on that day, I can’t help but smile and feel grateful for the unique blend of knowledge and humor that unfolded in that dentist’s waiting room. It was an unforgettable moment that taught me that inspiration can come from the most unexpected sources.

  1. Unexpected encounters are fantastic! Met a nice older lady the other day in my shop who talked about her grandson going to study music and teaching another elderly women to play the piano, she was super excited for her grandson!
