The Midnight Riddle: A Short Story First Draft

Daily writing prompt
What time do you go to bed and wake up currently?

Dr. Emma Sinclair cast her gaze out of the vast expanse of her apartment window, drinking in the serene tableau of Bucharest under a silvered moonlight. The city, bathed in an otherworldly glow, had succumbed to a nocturnal hush. The hands of the clock were inching towards the witching hour, the time when she usually surrendered to the realm of dreams. She prided herself on her disciplined routine—early to bed, early to rise. But on this night, something felt different.

As Emma nestled under the covers, she shuttered her eyes, anticipating the embrace of a tranquil sleep. Yet, as the minutes morphed into an eternity, sleep remained a distant mirage. Her mind was a whirlpool of restless thoughts, and an uneasy sensation gnawed at her gut.

Stealing a glance at the clock, Emma was struck by its stubborn hands, frozen at the stroke of midnight. Time itself seemed to have taken a pause, adding to the surreal atmosphere enveloping her. Overwhelmed by a prickling apprehension, she swung her legs over the edge of the bed, resolved to decipher the enigma that had infiltrated her sanctuary.

Stalking down the dimly lit corridor, the soft patter of Emma’s footsteps reverberated against the cold marble floor. Shadows pirouetted on the walls, their eerie dance amplified by the stifling silence. The air was thick with expectation, as if harboring an untold secret. As she entered the living room, her heart skipped a beat. A bookshelf stood askew, its contents scattered in disarray. The sight was a discordant note in Emma’s symphony of meticulous organization, and it sent chills racing down her spine.
