Today’s Topic: How to develop characters (I)
To read Schiller’s dramas, in German, in the original, about ten years ago, I needed a French-Romanian dictionary. Because Schiller, a man of his time, used many Frenchisms and wrote in Germfrench.
To be honest, over the years I have been tempted to write in binary, in Esperanto, or in the Java language… as for the Englishisms, and the mocked Romglish, what else can I say? Every day characters speak it, creating a bilingual, lively, and melodious language, sometimes kitsch, some other times funny, very funny, or ambiguous, which seriously makes us think…
Far from being just a literary artifice, Romglish is necessary in the virtual world, on the net, and especially on search engines. Therefore, in what follows, I use barbarisms.
Returning to the turmoil of the manuscript I’m working on now, I’ll try to review character-building techniques. Years ago, I developed a series of characters, starting from mental images, searching on google for pictures that correspond to them, and then subjecting them to a complex interview.
- Google search (searching, for example: “nasty redhead”)
- Interview (part one) https://www.16personalities.com/free-personality-test
- Interview (part two) https://thewritingkylie.com/blog/get-to-know-your-characters-with-character-interviews-115-questions
- Interview (part three) https://www.vanityfair.com/magazine/2000/01/proust-questionnaire
- Background story (imagining the “nasty redhead’s” past)
- Future story (imagining “nasty redhead’s” future)
The planning of that series of novels took a year, I wrote a lot, but I was not satisfied with the result. This time, I hope to have better luck. I’m curious what a machine, a character generator can provide.
Well, that’s all for today!
